Railing Contractor For Custom Wrought-Iron Railings

New Orleans is known for many things: festival, jambalaya, the bayou, and more. One of the most distinctive features of New Orleans landscapes and homes is our ornate wrought-iron railings – it’s why we’re sometimes called “the city of iron lace.”

These railings were introduced in the 1800s and carried into modern style, gracing the balconies, gates, and homes of New Orleans residents and businesses.

If you’d like to add New Orleans style to your home (without dipping into your retirement fund), these wrought-iron railings are the way to go. At Big Easy Iron Works, all ironwork is created from scratch, in-house right here in NOLA.

If you’re considering installing exterior balcony railings or French quarter-style railings, our designers can talk with you about creating a design that matches your personal style while reflecting the unmatched architectural heritage of New Orleans.

About New Orleans Exterior Railings

Our city has unique roots. Since the mid-1800s, our city has been partly defined by our detailed New Orleans style gate railings, New Orleans style iron posts, and more.

Many of the wrought-iron railings in our city are 100-200 years old, because with proper care, wrought iron railings last indefinitely.

The story behind New Orleans-style railings

When wrought-iron railings became “trendy” in the mid-1800s, the city was already equipped with dozens of blacksmiths (unlike other regions). New Orleans’ craftsmen quickly supplied the growing demand for ornate balconies; in fact, many of them “signed” their work with their initials or other symbols worked into the New Orleans style iron posts on their railings. Before long, the NOLA metro area was known as the “city of iron lace.”

Bringing history into your home

About our wrought iron terrace railings

At Big Easy Iron Works, we believe wrought iron is one of the highest-quality exterior and interior railings that can be installed.

Here are a few of the ways our railings can improve your home:

  • Elaborate, custom designs available to match or complement your fencing, security door, windows, or interior railings
  • Last indefinitely even with inclement weather: Wood exterior railings will eventually rot, no matter how well-made they may be. Wrought-iron, on the other hand, will last indefinitely with proper care: they won’t even rust if properly painted every 1-5 years.
  • Provide safety from slips and falls. As wrought-iron fences are welded together, you don’t need to worry about posts or railings “coming loose” unexpectedly.
  • Durable even with kids, pets, and crazy weather. From unrelenting hail to teething puppies to adventurous kids, there are many things that can (unintentionally) chip away at wood railings. Wrought iron railings, on the other hand, can stand up to even the harshest wear and tear.

Why wrought iron, and not some other metal?

We know that as a homeowner, you probably want to consider all your options before choosing a material for exterior railings. To help with this decision, we’ve listed a few reasons we prefer wrought iron to other metals below:

  • Wrought iron is stronger than cast iron when it’s completed, giving you peace of mind about the security of your railing.
  • Even though it’s stronger than cast iron when finished, wrought iron is more lithe and moldable during crafting. This allows us to create a variety of beautiful designs for your railing.
  • Some people consider aluminum railings. We don’t recommend them; you’ll likely need to replace these types of railings after a few years, while a wrought-iron railing should not need to be replaced in your lifetime (unless you decide to change your design).

Locally-owned and operated

Big Easy Iron Works is proud to provide wrought-iron railings for the NOLA metropolitan area. As a locally owned and operated company, we believe that investing in our clients is investing in our community.

Our craftsmen have studied New Orleans decorative railing styles and create their wrought-iron work locally – so when you hire us, you know you’re getting an authentic New Orleans product.

  • Expertise in Exterior Railings for New Orleans: We’ve not only studied New Orleans designs, but we’ve installed countless railings for local residents.
  • Custom options available: While we enjoy creating traditional New Orleans exterior balcony railings, we’re capable of designing almost any railing that you can imagine.
  • Top reviews by our clients: We’ve spent 30 years in the NOLA metro area cultivating a reputation for craftsmanship, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Repair services if necessary: A properly-maintained wrought iron railing should last a lifetime, but we know – sometimes, life happens, and you miss your maintenance. If your railing is beginning to rust or break down, we can repair it for you.
  • “Near me” service: We aren’t a faceless company in some faraway city; we live here. New Orleans is our number one priority (in fact, it’s our only priority). When you call us, you know you’ll get the personalized attention you deserve.

About New Orleans

We’ve built our business in New Orleans because the culture, energy, and community here is unlike any other. If you’ve just moved here, welcome! You’ll enjoy exploring our artistic, diverse, and friendly city.

Here are a few of our favorite places:

  • The French Quarter: Yes, its cliché, but it’s also a beautiful area full of history, art, and good food. Once in a while, on a day you have the energy to elbow your way through a few crowds, make your way here for the best gumbo and antique shopping in the metro area.
  • The Steamboat Natchez: New Orleans was built on the Mississippi River, and much of our history and culture centers around the river. The Steamboat Natchez gives you an opportunity to experience this culture first-hand with live shows, exceptional food, and live music.
  • Barataria Preserve: This park offers guided tours as well as hiking paths, where you can spot crocodiles, turtles, and more New Orleans wildlife in their natural habitat (as opposed to, say, around your neighbor’s pool).
